In front of and '!!Many Bothans died.! Officially 5 years beginning at Scarif and ending at Jakku. This is open to interpretation though. The war definitely finished in 5ABY when the Empire and New Republic signed the Galactic Concordance. But we obviously see a hell of a lot of fighting before 0ABY in Rebels. I suppose Scarif was the first 'conventional' engagement between the two sides and the Empire didn't recognise that all these individuals cells across the galaxy were organised together until then.A point to consider from the real world though; we mark the end of the Second World War in 1945 when Japan surrendered. China was one of the five main victors alongside the USA, Britain, France and the Soviet Union. But Japan and China had been fighting continuously since 1937 but we mark the start as 1939 when Britain and France started fighting Germany.

So the whole dating system has a European bent on it.I think you could say something similar of the Galactic Civil War which probably has a Core World bent on it. I'd say there should be two 'phases' for the GCW, with the first ending when the second begins. The first would be the 'stirring of rebellion phase', where there are numerous unaffiliated rebel factions forming and operating throughout the galaxy. It'd probably begin shortly after RotS, and end with the battle of Scarif/Yavn. The second would be the 'open Rebellion' phase, which starts with Scarif/Yavin, and ends with the signing of the Concordance. We could say the 'stirring phase' begins around 15 BBY (based on Lords of the Sith) and ends in 0 ABY. Then, the GCW proper beings in 0 ABY and ends in 5 ABY.

So, in total it'd be about 20 years, but only 5 or 6 of them saw 'organized open warfare'.

In front of and '!!Many Bothans died.! I need to rewatch the scene (never going to complain about that) but I thought they were holding back since their fighters were engaged amongst the rebel fleet. So they sit on top of the shield gate and defend while their fighters go to town. If a rebel ship comes closer and there is a clear firing lane they’d open up their turbolaser batteries. If you want to see incompetence in Star Wars naval engagements watch the beginning of TLJ. That scene told me I was going to enjoy my beer and pizza a lot more that night than the movie I came to see in a crowded theater.

The First Order jumps in and catches the Resistance evacuating and they just sit there. Hux should have just had his SD’s open fire and deploy their fighters. I honestly believe that scene could have been so much more actioned packed, dramatic, and visually awesome. Some thoughts the Battle of Scarif:The Empire had two ISD's on station with limited fighter and gun support from the shield gate itself, versus a numerically superior but technologically inferior Rebellion flotilla.

They know they have heavy reinforcements quickly incoming which will decisively tilt the fight in their favor.Based on the fighter strafing runs in the movie, I think it's safe to assume that the Rebellion needs some capital ship firepower to take down the gate through conventional means. As a result, the Empire's objective at the beginning of the fight boils down to 'keep the Rebellion capital ships away from the gate until reinforcements arrive.' No matter the means, this is their win condition. As long as the gate is intact by the time the Death Star and the third ISD jumps in, the Rebels lose any hope of extracting the data and getting out alive.Assuming that two ISDs overmatch and have comparable weapon ranges to the Rebellion flotilla as per your assumption (else it makes no sense to attack) then their best tactic is still to sit on the shield gate and use Fighters and turbolaser barrages to play keep away at max range. This is due to a variety of reasons:First, fighting at max available range diminishes the effect of the Rebels' numerical superiority.

They cannot flank the ISDs to hit at their weakly defended engines, and they cannot force the ISDs to spread shield and point defense coverage to cover their flanks. The ISDs are free to focus weapons and shields forward and turn the fight into a battle of attrition which they know they will win barring circumstances out of their control. They can easily prioritize targets by going for stuff closest to the gate.

A conservative tactic, yes, but I'd be conservative too if the price of being ballsy and failing was death by suffocation.Attacking with both ships opens the possibility for additional Rebel ships to flank or hyperspace in from unexpected angles to made a run for the shield gate, increasing the chance of mission failure. It also means that they are further from supporting forces if they are somehow crippled by the Rebel fleet.Attacking with a single ship while holding one in reserve invites defeat in detail, moreso if a single ISD is inferior to or even on-par with the Rebel fleet. You lose the ability to rotate around which ship is on point to soak shield damage like the Rebels were doing to preserve their ships, and the attacking ship will have limited freedom of movement anyway to avoid leaving the defending ship's support range. So because their priority is the shield gate and the information on Scarif, they decided to fight conservatively. The ram breaking the shield gate was convenient for the Rebellion but not crucial; if the ram had disabled the ISDs far away from the gate then they would have been able to just waltz their cruisers up to the gate and blow it apart manually. Finally, the movie script demands that the shield gate fall. If one ISD had gone on attack and died by itself leading to the second ISD getting swarmed, your commend would've been asking why they didn't both attack or both defend. If both ISDs had attacked, the Rebels would've sneaked around and you'd be asking why they didn't leave at least one ship to defend. By leaving both ISDs to defend they make the scene less about shitty space tactics and more about the combat.EDIT: Also, the ISD that jumped in at the end was hitting a weakened, damaged Rebel fleet from the flank, not a fresh one with shields focused towards them.

They were able to clean up easily because of the efforts of the first pair of ISDs. This isn't a 'fan theories make it worse' situation. This is an understanding how battle works situation, and understanding how big of a difference surprise can make. When the Rebels arrive they have the advantage of surprise on their side so the Empire is not prepared, while they are. As well they have a whole fleet to combat the Star Destroyers. The reason those destroyers aren't able to over power the Rebel fleet is because they are not powerful enough to over power a Rebel fleet. Even though it was 2 SD vs a fleet they were still holding their own, it was only some ingenious tactics that won the fight. Now lets fast-forward to the end of the fight.

The Rebel ships are preparing to jump to hyperspace, a decent chunk of them already have jump. The ships there are still weakened, and they are surprised and unprepared for Vader's Star Destroyer suddenly appearing guns blazing.Normally a cheetah would stand no chance against a lion, but if that lion is severely injured, tired, and caught off guard that cheetah is able to defeat the lion.
